Closure of Heathrow Airport (EmIS 039/2025 of 21.03.2025)

EmIS 039/2025

The designated operator of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Royal Mail, would like to advise other Union member countries and their designated operators that Heathrow Airport is closed until 23.59 on 21 March 2025, owing to a fire at a West London electrical substation and ensuing power outage that has left the airport without electricity.

Royal Mail is taking the necessary action with regard to carriers and airline sheds. However, this event will affect all import and export mail flows through Heathrow on 21 March and over the coming days.

Following the resumption of operations, there will be impact on mail processing for 24 to 48 hours while the backlog at Heathrow Airport is cleared.

Royal Mail’s London Air Mail Unit, International Logistics Centre, Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre and Coventry facilities remain fully operational.

Any issues or questions should be addressed to Mr Gurwinder Rai at [email protected].

Royal Mail apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks Union member countries and their designated operators for their understanding. It will provide an update via EmIS when further information becomes available.
