Arab region EMS operators focus on e-commerce growth

Senior managers from the Arab Region met in Dubai to focus on the execution of the EMS Business Plan 2017-2020 so that they are ready to meet an anticipated surge in EMS through e-commerce. Participants at the EMS Symposium in March, discussed expected increases in EMS profitability and agreed to the 'Dubai Declaration to Position EMS for Growth in the Arab Region'.

The Arab region is already in a good position to grow EMS. 74% of online sellers from the Arab region already sell internationally through, on average, more than three online channels with electronics, fashion and jewelry and beauty brands among the most popular items. By 2020 it is estimated that there will be around a 6% growth of packages *. Arab Posts are poised to grow higher than the market rate if EMS Cooperative members ensure high quality of service through consistent reliability and visibility.

Mr. Sultan Al Midfa, the acting CEO of the Emirates Post which hosted the event, noted that “this UPU EMS Symposium provided innovative ideas on the growth of EMS, with special focus on success stories from the region and the challenges facing the region’s postal organisations.” During the three-day symposium, top officials the Emirates Post, Liban Post, Saudi Post, Poste Moroc, Tunisia Post, Algeria Post, Japan Post, and the Sudanese Postal Service participated to share EMS service performance know-how, customs clearance and transport best practices and market successes in growing volume.

All attendees agreed to the Dubai Declaration to Position EMS for Growth in the Arab Region, a commitment to ensure e-commerce readiness by reaching EMS Business Plan service performance targets through the implementation of EMS standards, Pay-for-performance and adoption of customs and transport framework agreements and best practices.
